Kickstarter Death Spasms -- Spike: A Love Story, Too

Posted by Matzerath - March 22nd, 2012

In what was probably an ill-advised experiment, I wanted to try a Kickstarter before every old school game developer took up space with their retro-hip money-making extravaganzas, so I've been trying to fund development for Spike: A Love Story Too, sequel to a game made popular on Newgrounds itself.

It's gone well, but it's been a major chore just to get halfway to my meager goal. The theme is a hard sell, to be sure, but I at least managed to climb the charts. Strangely, making Bob Ross an in-game character brought in the bulk of my pledges.
You can check it out here:

Look if you wanna, I'm not fishing for moola as much as sharing the madness. It'll end on late Saturday/early Sunday, and we shall see what we shall see. It's been nuts, I'll say that much, and will share a post report on it all afterward. Spike will be made one way or the other -- but maybe later than sooner. And I've learned a lot about Kickstarter in the process, which will likely lead to another, even stranger attempt later in the year! Lord British will probably have his Kickstarter up by then.

I didnt bother to look at the videoo and i hate kickstarter, but i figure you brought me atleast 10 dollars worth of entertainment with Love Story when it was on here (well it still is). So yeah good luck!

Thanks Luis! And ya, there's a lot of Kickstarter hate, likely justified -- it's gonna be all up in everyone's Internet face in a few weeks, I bet, as every retired game developer rises from their tombs.

well my hate with kickstarter is that they hold no accountability to the person hosting the kickstarter project. Like theres alot of stuff there thats kickstarted and the person mysteriously disappears after theyve raised the funds. I know that in the end kickstarter could care less, they already got and probably spent their commission money so they are the middle man and they shouldnt care if a project actually goes anywhere with that money or not. I can see that logic but that doesnt make it any less frusterating.

hmm betcha Tom would've given you a shout out if there wasn't so little time left...

Lol, kickstarter.

It's true Luis, there's a few I know about in Games that have definitely dropped off the map -- and a few I'm highly suspicious of. I myself contributed to Octodad last year, and was getting a bit worried until there was an update recently, though it's still not out. Myself, I tried to pitch something within the bounds of reason and time, with a goal that didn't seem psychotic.

wonderful job reaching your goal

Thanks BSTHEDOG! It was, frankly, pretty unexpected. Talk about a last minute save!
